Salute: Out With a Bang

The Towson Tigers’ season came to a close yesterday afternoon in the opening round of the  CAA tournament.  The Tigers fell to the fifth-seeded Delaware Blue Hens 72-65 and ended the season with a record of 1-31.

Towson fought all the way to the end, though.  Down 11 at the half, the Tigers came back to tie the score at 53 with 7:30 remaining in the game.  The Tigers surely gave Delaware all they wanted, but the Blue Hens pulled away in the final minutes and will face ODU in quarterfinal action this afternoon.

Towson senior Robert Nwankwo, a favorite here at It Goes to XI, closed his career with a tremendous game.  He scored 27 points and grabbed 20 rebounds (12 offensive), and threw in a blocked shot and three steals for good measure.  It was the first 20/20 game in CAA tournament history.

Nwankwo finished the year averaging a double-double (12.5 points and 10.1 rebounds). He also blocked 77 shots and earned a spot on the CAA’s All-Defensive Team.

Congratulations to Nwankwo on a fine college career, and congratulations to Towson for closing a long and disheartening season with a great competitive effort.

So what you’re saying is that it’s not looking good for ODU in the CAA tournament?

On the contrary – if ODU beats Delaware today, they will likely play Drexel on Sunday, but Drexel is missing a starter due to legal problems. Kent Bazemore has been unstoppable lately, so ODU could well do it.
